Don't Stop Imagining

Sleep deprived and over-caffeinated, I clawed into the Basement last night, not knowing what to expect. The room was crowded with a mixture of young and old, all of whom ventured to catch a glimpse of Youth Lagoon. The cold winter air outdoors ushered in many Fred Rogers sweaters that the Urban Outfitters crowd wore as a badge of honor, subscribing to the hipster memo. The huddled audience was first treated to an excellent introduction from Young Magic. The Australian group paused to take in the positive reception after they hit the ground running with their first two songs. "Thank you so much Nashville, this is our first time here." Their R&B rhythms blended uniquely with electronic rumblings and esoteric vocal melodies. Don't be a stranger YM, you're welcome in Music City anytime.

Youth Lagoon is the brainchild of 22 year-old Trevor Powers (right). The Boise, Idaho native recently released his home-recorded debut, The Year of Hibernation.  The album is full of sound bleeds and fuzzy layers, comparable to a muddled canvas of indecipherable colors. Youth Lagoon's live performance was a variation of the album. The stripped down two-piece performance was unable to match the fullness of the album, but coming up short isn't always a bad thing. The vocals we're more apparent and once they dove into the beat, they never left the pocket. Each song was like watching a rolling stone gain speed and absorb calculated debris.

We We're Dancing the Night Away

September is a great month to be a Nashvillian. As we sing a swan song to summer, shows are frequent and the performances memorable. I caught three shows last week, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and TV on the Radio featuring Broken Social Scene. There is not a more attractive live performance than Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Grace screams, sings, kicks, and claps you into submission, as her vocal tone and honest musicianship grabs you by the wrist and compels your body to move. In short, she's got the medicine...

Black Moth Super Rainbow is an intriguing young band, they have a distinct sound that teeters the line between organic and electronic. Their performance was the first time I've ever seen an electronic group incorporate a live banjo.

Having seen TVOTR a few times before, I was really excited to see how their live show would transpose onto the Ryman stage. It was slightly disappointing, Tunde Adebimpe lacked energy and Kyp Malone at times abstained from chiming in his falsetto harmonies which are paramount to their noisy modern-day Brian Wilson sound. I believe this is in part because of their rigorous touring schedule and the upcoming performance at Austin City Limits which occurred this weekend. Phish has recently included a cover of "Golden Age" in their live performances, I couldn't believe it went missing Wednesday night.
TVOTR is a better studio band, that's where their doo-wop melodies don't get crowded out by highly distorted guitars. Check out the hilarious video for "You." The band did an entire youtube video for the album, the premise being they've all been away from each other for a while. Tunde is now on the street, performing under a Prince-like unspeakable symbol.

Young Liars is my favorite song of theirs to see live. It was first released in 2003, off of the Young Liars EP.

Cool Summer Air

I'm going to try to do an update around this time every Tuesday...
Thanks for looking, all is done in the name of good music!
~RAC does a great job of combining the best elements of the original work with his own creative force.
I foresee production credits (a la Danger Mouse) in Andre Allen Anjos's future.

Throwback Thursday - Santana

This Cinco de Mayo we honor Santana.  Santana was formed in San Francisco in 1967 around guitarist Carlos Santana.  Their breakthrough came in 1969 at Woodstock just months after finishing their self-titled debut.

In 1970, their second album, Abraxas, peaked at #1 on the US Billboard Top 200 fueled by the success of the song "Black Magic Woman."

Legacy

Santana remains relevant to this day, his psychedelic Latin sound is distinct. He had a return to commercial success in 1999 with his album Supernatural, which enlisted the help of many notable singers. Rolling Stone named Carlos number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time in 2003.

Take Away Tuesday - José González

José González is unique, his performances consistent mostly of just him and his guitar.  So besides a slight cough, this take away show posed no problem!

A native of Sweden, his pursuit of a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg was interrupted by his music career.

Nothing more awkward than the one person clap
