Throwback Thursday - The Kinks

It's hard to think of a more overshadowed band than The Kinks.  Their pop melodies, quirky lyrics and deep catalogue of hits is the reason they're still influencing bands today.  The Ramones, The Clash, The Pretenders, Oasis and Blur are just a few of their followers.

A Well Respected Man (1965)

You Really Got Me (1964)
If the Casey Kasem intro isn't enough... this song came out ten years before The Ramones were active!

Lola (1970)
They're sound really progressed well through the 70s.  "Lola" came out two years before another famous transvestite tale, Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side."

Waterloo Sunset (1967)
Probably the crowning jewel of The Kinks legacy, this song came in at #42 on Rolling Stones "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Legacy
Musicologist Joe Harrington described The Kinks' influence on the development of hard rock and heavy metal as such: "'You Really Got Me', 'All Day and All of the Night' and 'I Need You' were predecessors of the whole three-chord genre ... the Kinks did a lot to help turn rock 'n' roll (Jerry Lee Lewis) into rock (Led Zeppelin)."

Key Tracks
Apeman
Dead End Street
Death Of A Clown
Autumn Almanac

Take Away Tuesday - Local Natives

This week's take away show features the up and coming group, Local Natives. They recently began to gain traction as the opening act for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Now the LA natives are preparing for their second album, which should propel their sound even further.

They'll be performing at Sasquatch Music Festival and Lollapalooza this summer!

"I think we're going to have to forget about the radio and just go back to word of mouth."
~Joe Strummer
